Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Potato masher or hand mixer
  • Cutting board + knife
  • Small bowls for toppings
  • Slow cooker (optional for keeping warm)

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes peeled and cubed
  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ –¾ cup milk or cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices cooked bacon crumbled
  • 1 cup steamed broccoli chopped
  • ½ cup sautéed mushrooms
  • ¼ cup sliced green onions
  • ½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • Optional: gravy crispy onions, jalapeños, hot sauce

Instructions

  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add cubed potatoes and cook until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes. Drain well.
  • Return potatoes to the pot. Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper. Mash with a hand mixer or masher until smooth and creamy.
  • While the potatoes are cooking, chop and prep all toppings. Keep hot items warm until ready to serve.
  • Transfer mashed potatoes to a serving bowl or slow cooker. Lay out toppings in small bowls and let guests build their own bowls!

Notes

  • Potato Tip: Don’t over-mash or they’ll get gluey. A hand masher is safest if you’re worried.
  • Shortcut Alert: Store-bought mashed potatoes work fine if you’re short on time,  just add a bit more butter or milk.
  • Make it Meatless: Swap the bacon for roasted chickpeas or crispy tofu crumbles.
  • Keep it Warm: A slow cooker on low keeps everything cozy during dinner service.
