    The Ingredients

the ingredients you need to make this recipes
chicken drumsticks with skin
chili
oregano
garlic powder
salt
black pepper
olive oil
 barbecue sauce
 parsley
nonstick cooking spray

Chicken Drumsticks (with skin) – These are juicy cuts of chicken. The skin crisps up beautifully in the air fryer, making the dish even more delicious.

Chili Powder (Seasoning) – A spice blend made from ground chili peppers. It adds a hint of heat to the dish, but you can adjust the amount to your taste.

Oregano – An aromatic herb with a slightly earthy, Mediterranean flavor. It pairs well with chicken and other spices.

Garlic Powder – Provides a rich garlic flavor without the need to chop fresh garlic. It blends well with other seasonings to enhance the taste of the chicken.

Salt – Essential for bringing out all the flavors.

Black Pepper – Adds a mild kick and enhances the overall flavor of the chicken.

Olive Oil – Helps coat the drumsticks with the seasoning and contributes to crispy, golden skin.

Barbecue Sauce – Adds a sweet and smoky touch to the chicken. It caramelizes slightly during cooking, making the drumsticks even more flavorful.

Parsley – A sprinkle of fresh chopped parsley adds a pop of color and a subtle herby finish.

    See recipe card for quantities.

Step-by-step Instruction for the Air Fryer Chicken Legs with BBQ Glaze.

    Step 1: Prepare the Marinade

    • In a large bowl, mix the spices (chili powder, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper) with the olive oil and 2 tablespoons of barbecue sauce. Whisk until well combined to create a smooth marinade.
    • Add the chicken drumsticks to the bowl and mix using a spoon or your hands (wear gloves if preferred) until each piece is evenly coated with the seasoning and sauce. For extra flavor, let the chicken marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 1 hour, but this step is optional.

    Step 2: Air Fryer Cooking

    • Preheat your air fryer to 380°F (190°C) for 3 to 5 minutes.
    • Place the drumsticks in the air fryer basket in a single layer, making sure they don’t overlap for even cooking. Cook for 20 to 35 minutes, flipping the drumsticks halfway through (around 10-15 minutes).
    • Cooking time may vary depending on the size of the drumsticks and your air fryer. To ensure they are fully cooked, insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the chicken—it should read 165°F (74°C) for safe consumption.
    • If you prefer extra crispy and slightly caramelized chicken, brush the drumsticks with a little more barbecue sauce during the last 5 minutes of cooking.

Step 3: Finishing Touches & Serving

    • Remove the drumsticks from the air fryer basket and let them rest for 2 to 3 minutes before serving.
    • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley for a pop of color and added freshness.

    Variations

There are so many delicious variations of this recipe! Here are a few of my favorites:

    • Add some cumin to the spice mix for a smoky flavor.
    • Swap out the BBQ sauce for your buffalo sauce or teriyaki sauce.
    • Try using chicken thighs instead of drumsticks.
    • Add cayenne pepper if you want a spicier version

    Equipment

    • Air Fryer
    • Medium or a large bowl
Close up on the cooked chicken drumstick.

    Notes

    • You can use any chicken for this recipe, but I find that drumsticks work best. Depending on your preference, you can also use bone-in or boneless chicken breast.
    • I like to use a mix of chili powder, oregano, and garlic powder for the seasoning, but you can really use any combination of spices that you like.
    • The amount of salt and pepper is up to you. I usually go light on the salt because the BBQ sauce can be quite salty.
    • You can also make the same recipe with chicken breasts
    •  You can cook the chicken at any temperature you like, but I find that 380 degrees Fahrenheit works well. If you want darker and crispier skin, you can go up to 400 ˚F, but keep an eye on them to ensure they don't burn.
    • The cooking time will vary depending on the drumsticks' size, so check the chicken's internal temperature to ensure that it is cooked through. The safe cooking temperature is 165 degrees.

    Top tips

Here are a few tips and tricks to help you make the perfect air fryer chicken drumsticks:

    • Make sure to coat the chicken evenly with the sauce. This will help ensure that it cooks evenly.
    • To avoid sticking, make sure to spray the basket of the air fryer with cooking spray before adding the chicken.
    • To make sure that the chicken is cooked use a meat thermometer

    Storage + Reheating

Storage: Leftover chicken legs can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Reheat: Pop them back into the air fryer at 350°F for 5–7 minutes, or until heated through and crispy again. You can also microwave, but the skin won’t be as crisp.

Freezing: These freeze surprisingly well! Let them cool completely, wrap in foil or plastic wrap, and store in a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Yes, you can definitely make this recipe ahead of time. Just mix the spices, olive oil, and BBQ sauce in a bowl. Coat the chicken in the mixture, and store it in the fridge. When ready, cook according to the instructions.

Can I use frozen chicken for this recipe?

I would not recommend using frozen chicken for this recipe. The cooking time will be much longer, and the chicken may not be cooked through.

What should I serve as a side dish with air fryer chicken drumsticks?

There are so many delicious options! I love to serve air fryer chicken drumsticks with a side of roasted vegetables, a simple coleslaw, or a potato salad. You could also serve them with rice or mashed potatoes. The possibilities are endless!
