Looking for a show-stopping dessert that's easy to throw together but still feels wow? These Mini Trifles in Mason Jars are your new summer secret weapon. They're bright, patriotic, and ridiculously simple, thanks to store-bought vanilla cake and a dreamy whipped topping. Perfect for BBQs, potlucks, or any occasion where you want to impress without stress.

Two mason jars filled with layered dessert consisting of whipped cream, blueberries, strawberries, and pieces of cake. A blue and white checked cloth is in the background.

We make these every year for our family’s July 4th celebration, and there’s never a single jar left. The combo of juicy berries, soft vanilla cake, and fluffy Dream Whip hits that perfect balance of light, sweet, and nostalgic. If you're all about easy patriotic treats, you’ll also love my Red, White, and Blue Popsicles—another fun favorite for summer parties!

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    1. Prepare the Dream Whip according to the box directions. You'll need the dry mix, cold milk, and vanilla extract. Whip it until it’s thick and holds soft peaks.
    2. Cut the vanilla cake into small, bite-sized cubes.
    3. Layer in your mason jars: start with a layer of cake cubes, followed by a spoonful of whipped topping, then a layer of berries (blueberries + raspberries).
    4. Repeat the layers until the jars are full, finishing with a dollop of Dream Whip on top.
    5. Garnish with sprinkles just before serving for that firework-worthy finish!
    6. Chill until ready to serve, ideally within 1 day for the best texture.

    Tips for Success

    • Use cold metal bowls and beaters to whip Dream Whip faster on hot summer days.
    • Don’t over-pack the jars—leave room at the top for whipped cream and sprinkles.
    • Want extra texture? Add crushed graham crackers between layers.
    • These are best the day they’re made, but you can prep the components ahead.

    Variations to Try

    • Mini chocolate trifle – Use chocolate cake and strawberries.
    • Lemon berry trifle – Add lemon zest to your Dream Whip for a zingy twist.
    • Strawberry shortcake jars – Swap blueberries for sliced strawberries only.

    Storage Tips

    • Store covered in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
    • Don’t freeze—Dream Whip doesn't hold up well after thawing.

    FAQs

Can I use Cool Whip instead of Dream Whip?

Yes, but Dream Whip gives a fluffier, more vintage-style texture.

Can I prep these the night before?

Yes! Just wait to add the sprinkles until right before serving.
