I make this air fryer BBQ chicken breast on nights when I want real food but my patience is… limited. You know those days. Juicy chicken, sticky BBQ sauce, zero grill, zero drama. It smells like summer but works on a random Tuesday in sweatpants.

A plate with sliced glazed chicken breast, steamed broccoli, and a serving of white rice.

The chicken comes out tender inside with lightly caramelized BBQ sauce on the outside. Smoky, savory, just a little sweet. I usually serve it with something easy like Air Fryer Broccolini, rice , or sliced over a salad. Honestly, it also makes the best leftovers. If you liked my air fryer chicken drumsticks or honey garlic chicken, this one fits right in.

    The ingredients

Raw chicken breasts on a plate, surrounded by bowls of peppercorns, salt, olive oil, BBQ Sauce, soy sauce and a spoon of paprika, all arranged on a white marble surface.

    Boneless skinless chicken breasts
Try to use similar-sized pieces so they cook evenly. Thick ones need a little prep.

    Barbecue sauce
Use one you actually like. Sweet, smoky, spicy. They all work.

    Soy sauce
Adds depth and keeps the chicken from tasting flat.

    Smoked paprika
This is the quiet hero here. Regular paprika works, but smoked is better.

    Olive oil
Helps everything stick and keeps the chicken juicy.

    Salt and black pepper
Go light on salt if your BBQ sauce is salty.

Steps-by-step Instructions for the Air Fryer BBQ Chicken Breast

    Prep

Remove the chicken from the fridge and pat it dry. If one breast is thicker, slice it horizontally or gently pound it so both are about 1 inch thick.

    Season

In a bowl, mix olive oil, soy sauce, ΒΌ cup BBQ Sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Let it sit for a few minutes if you can.

    Preheat

Heat your air fryer to 370Β°F. Lightly oil the basket so nothing sticks.

    Cook

Place the chicken in a single layer. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes. Flip and cook another 8 to 10 minutes until the thickest part hits about 160Β°F.

    Sauce

Brush the rest of the BBQ sauce over the chicken and return it to the air fryer for 1 to 3 minutes, just until the sauce is warm and lightly sticky.

    Rest

Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before slicing. This keeps it juicy.

A whisk in a glass bowl mixing a brown liquid, with containers of black pepper, salt, and a bottle of oil on a white surface.
Two raw chicken breasts coated in marinade sit in a glass bowl on a white surface, with bowls of black pepper and salt nearby.
Two raw, glazed chicken breasts placed inside an air fryer basket, with bowls of peppercorns and salt in the background.

    Sophie Tips

    • I always check temp early. Dry chicken is heartbreaking and totally avoidable.
    • If your BBQ sauce burns easily, add it only at the very end like we do here.
    • This recipe is great for meal prep. I make a double batch without thinking twice.
    • If your air fryer runs hot, pull the chicken a minute early and check it.

    Variations

    • Spicy BBQ Chicken: Add a pinch of cayenne or chili flakes to the seasoning.
    • Honey BBQ: Mix a little honey into the BBQ sauce before brushing.
    • Garlic BBQ: Add garlic powder to the seasoning rub.
    • BBQ Chicken Strips: Slice the chicken first for faster cooking and kid-friendly pieces.

    Serving Ideas

    • Slice and serve over rice or quinoa bowls
    • Pair with roasted or air fryer vegetables
    • Chop and add to wraps or sandwiches
    • Serve cold on a BBQ chicken salad the next day

    Storage Tips

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheat gently in the air fryer or microwave. Add a little extra BBQ sauce if needed.

    FAQ

How do I keep air fryer chicken breast from drying out?

Even thickness and checking the temperature early makes all the difference. Also, don't skip the rest time.

Can I use frozen chicken breasts?

I don't recommend it for this recipe. The seasoning won't stick well and the texture won't be the same.

What internal temperature should BBQ chicken reach?

165Β°F in the thickest part. I pull it at 160Β°F before saucing since it keeps cooking.

    • 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts about 6 oz each
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
    • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
    • Salt and black pepper to taste
    • Β½ cup barbecue sauce

    Instructions

    • Pat the chicken breasts dry and trim or flatten them so they are even in thickness.
    • In a bowl, whisk olive oil, soy sauce, ΒΌ cup BBQ sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Coat the chicken completely. Let it rest a few minutes if possible.
    • Preheat the air fryer to 370Β°F and lightly grease the basket.
    • Arrange chicken in a single layer and cook for 8 minutes.
    • Flip and cook another 8 to 10 minutes, until the internal temperature reaches about 160Β°F.
    • Brush the rest of the BBQ sauce over the chicken and cook for 1 to 3 more minutes until it reaches 165Β°F.
